International Students’ Application Process to Australia

Studying abroad requires lots of research and preparation. It is no different if you are intending to study in Australia. Australia possesses some of the world’s finest universities and institutions, and is home to thousands of students from all around the globe. That being said, it is extremely vital for prospective students to research adequately and identify their courses of interests among the wide varieties of programs that the Australian institutions offer before they embark on their application journey. If planned well, applying to Australian institutions is really easy. However, it is also equally possible to get lost amongst the vast arrays of information the internet provides. Therefore, a well-structured approach and trustable guidance is what prospective students should be seeking for.

Here are some of the steps that you should follow:

  1. Prepare and Complete IELTS Class:
  2. The first and foremost step to apply for Australia is to prepare for the IELTS exam. This can be done either by taking classes from experienced IELTS instructors or by preparing on your own. For those who prefer a structured and interactive approach to learning, enrolling for ILETS classes might help. For students who are confident about their self-study approach, collecting adequate study materials and mastering exam techniques might still be a challenge. Since IELTS preparation requires consistent effort and discipline, it is always recommended for students to take classes. Achieving a good IELTS score is necessary. You should be well-aware about the IELTS requirement of your proposed course and should better be prepared for the exam. You should at least achieve the minimum target score required by the selected university before applying for the offer letter.

  3. Apply for Offer Letter:
  4. To process for an offer letter to the university you want to apply the following documents are required:

    • Passport (Photocopy)
    • IELTS score sheet
    • All the Academic Documents till date
    • Resume/CV
    • Recommendation letter
    • Statement of purpose
    • Application form of University/ College
    • Work Experience (If any)
    • Marriage certificate (If married)
    • Prepare for Skype or Phone Interview from the University for Offer letter processing (not a mandatory process).

Additional documents might be needed depending upon the university. It is necessary to discuss to the consultancy for detail information. The duration of offer letter processing takes from one day to four weeks.

International students who have already met the university admission standards and paid the fees are given an unconditional offer letter, and they have already approved you as a university student.

Getting close to the deadline some international students may not be able to submit all the documents required by the university which may include IELTS score, passport copy, last semester mark sheet, etc. In such cases, the university provides conditional offer letter by affirming its interest in the student; that all formalities must be fulfilled within two to three months. In this case, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement submission is required.

You will receive a' Letter of Offer' if your application is successful. You will respond to this letter by signing and submitting an approval of the offer letter back to the organization to affirm it. Typically this may be accomplished by email or, in some cases, by the letter being scanned and forwarded. Letter of Offer is a deal between the university and you. It points out the course on which you will be enrolled, the terms of enrolment, the cost you will have to pay and the reimbursement due if you do not finish the course with that university. This contract is very critical–this signed document will be used to decide whether you can get a refund whether you don't continue your course or complete your course.

  5. GTE Requirements:
  6. For all student visas the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is a prerequisite. This is the most important reason the home affairs department denies visas to applicants. Students must ensure that, for the right purposes, they persuade the Visa Officer that their sole intention to travel to Australia is to complete their study. They should be able to prove that they have sufficient ties in their home country that will motivate them to return back after completion of their proposed course.

Writing a personal declaration concerning GTE requirements is necessary which must include:

    • Explaining personal and home country situation
    • Future value of the course you are studying
    • Research regarding potential situation in Australia
    • Immigrant history
    • Providing supporting financial and educational documents

One should be realistic enough during GTE requirement. Once the GTE requirement is confirmed, a full offer letter is received.

  7. Enrolment Confirmation:
  8. For enrolment the international student must receive the ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the Ministry Of Education in Keshar Mahal, Thamel. Then the required fees should be paid to the university. In case of if you have applied through education loan, your education loan needs to be disbursed. The amount to be disbursed into your account also varies, which will depend on your fee, OSHC amount. In most cases it is mandatory to disburse the living expenses as well. Once you have accepted the offer letter and deposited the required amount as mentioned, you will receive an ‘Electronic Confirmation of Enrolment’ (eCoE). It will detail the start date of your course, the overall course costs and how long the course is going to run. You are expected to have health insurance by the Australian Government, and you may have to extend your current Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which needs to be put back before the current visa's end date. Contact the health care provider to extend the expiration deadline.

  9. Health Check-ups and Interview:
  10. You will also need to do a health checkup medical. Only few designated organizations are allowed to conduct the medical such as the Norvic Hospital, IOM. A HAP number and a letter of recommendation, detailing which tests you will require needs to be determined prior to the medical. Submit your HAP ID and letter of referral along with the appointment and payment vouchers. When the reviews are done, the eMedical service must send the documentation to the home affairs department for further review.

  11. Visa Application:
  12. You may have various reasons for going abroad be it education, work, travel, business and more and each purpose will determine various visa categories. For education purpose you will be applying for student visa (subclass 500). The student visa (subclass 500) allows you to remain in Australia for up to five years for the purpose of full-time study at an educational institution. To be eligible to apply for the student visa (subclass 500), you must have received a full-time study offer from an Australian education institution. You will be asked to provide your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in your application.

It is always advised to apply visa from experienced visa officers who will check your application in detail and finalize the documentation. Even minor mistakes and error may lead for your visa application to be denied

  13. Biometrics:
  14. Applicants are requested for biometrics only when an VISA application has been placed. You will get a letter and your visa officer / counselor will normally get you through the process. The biometric is done by VFS Global located in Lagankhel, Lalitpur. It is necessary to act as soon as you receive the letter and instructions to provide biometrics as 14 days would be required.

  15. Get a Valid Visa:
  16. A decision regarding your visa depends on which university you are applying and how busy the Australian immigration officials are. This may take up to 45 working days. Through signing in to the immigration website you can check the status of your application and enter your appropriate TNR-number. The Australian authorities will usually contact you via e-mail until you have your visa decision ready. This may take few weeks. Your visa is electronic and you can print the letter of grant you get electronically after your visa has been accepted if you want a physical proof of that.

  17. Travelling to Australia:
  18. International students will reach Australia at the earliest 90 days before the start date of the course written on your CoE after you have obtained your visa. If you have not booked accommodation via your school, please inform them of your address in Australia within 7 days of your arrival. You usually have the option to remain in Australia for 30 days at the completion of your course, or 60 days if the course lasts more than 10 months. In most cases, the completion of your course will mean you will be eligible to exercise your Post study work rights given you meet all the criteria.
