482 Skills in Demand Visa (Subclass 482) Guide – Australia

"482 Skills in Demand visa Australia guide for skilled overseas workers

Subclass 482

What is the 482 visa?

The 482 visa Australia is a temporary work visa for skilled foreign nationals nominated by an approved employer. Also known as Skills in Demand visa subclass 482, it was introduced to address skill gaps across key sectors of the economy.

Depending on the stream, the 482 visa can be granted for up to 4 years. Hongkong passport holders may stay up to 5 years. 482 visa may lead to permanent residency – though there are additional eligibility criteria for that pathway.

What is the 482 visa? Your guide to the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)

The temporary skills in demand visa subclass 482 – often referred to simply as the 482 visa – allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill labour shortages. For many people, it provides a fast and flexible pathway to live and work in Australia. For employers, it’s a way to secure qualified staff when no suitable local candidates are available.

Whether you’re an applicant or a sponsoring business, understanding the process is essential. This guide explains what is a 482 visa, who can apply, how it works and what to expect.

Oli & Associates has been supporting skilled workers and Australian businesses with visa solutions since 2003. We’re here to help you navigate the system – accurately and efficiently

482 Visa Streams

There are three main streams under the visa 482 Australia program:

Each stream has different eligibility rules, fees, and possible outcomes. Choosing the right stream is crucial.

Core Skills Stream

Direct Entry Stream

Under the direct entry stream, applicants must be nominated by an employer, possess relevant skills (typically verified via a skills assessment), and meet health and character requirements.

Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream

Transition to Permanent Residency

This stream is designed for those who already hold a subclass 482 visa and have worked for the nominating employer for at least two years. It allows a smoother transition to permanent residency, without needing to meet current occupation list requirements.

Labour Agreement Stream

Flexible Terms for Employers

If a business has entered into a labour agreement with the Department of Home Affairs, it can nominate workers under more flexible terms. The labour agreement stream is particularly useful for roles not on standard occupation lists and can include regional or company-specific agreements.

How to Apply for a 482 Visa Australia

The application process for the temporary skill shortage visa subclass 482 involves three separate but connected stages:

1. Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS)

Before an employer can nominate a worker for a 482 visa, they must first be approved as a Standard Business Sponsor. This involves demonstrating that:

  • The business is legally and actively operating in Australia
  • It has the financial ability to pay all business obligations
  • It has a good record of compliance with immigration and workplace laws
  • It is not subject to adverse information (unless it is reasonable to disregard)

An approved sponsorship is generally valid for five years. Once approved, the business can sponsor multiple workers during that period.

Businesses nominating employees under the Labour Agreement Stream must have a Labour agreement. Labour agreements enable approved businesses to sponsor skilled overseas workers:

  • When there is a demonstrated need that cannot be met in the Australian labour market
  • Where standard temporary or permanent visa programs are not available

2. 482 Employer Nomination

Once sponsorship is approved, the employer can nominate a skilled overseas worker for a position in their business. To be approved, the nomination must:

  • Identify an occupation from the relevant 482 visa occupation list
  • Offer a salary that meets the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) or Specialist Skills Income Threshold (SSIT) and market rate requirements
  • Provide evidence of labour market testing (unless an exemption applies)
  • Demonstrate that the nominated position is genuine and aligns with the needs of the business

The employer must also pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy at this stage, based on the business size and proposed visa duration.

3. 482 Visa Application

After the nomination is lodged, the nominated worker can apply for the 482 visa Australia. To be eligible, the applicant must:

  • Have at least two years’ relevant work experience in the nominated occupation
  • Demonstrate they have the skills and qualifications required
  • Meet English language requirements
  • Obtain necessary health insurance
  • Undergo health and character checks

The visa application must be submitted while the nomination is still valid. The visa, if granted, allows the applicant to live and work in Australia for the duration permitted under the relevant stream.

482 Visa Occupation List

The 482 visa occupation list is a critical part of the eligibility process. It determines which occupations are eligible under each stream and whether applicants may be eligible for permanent residency later on.

Examples of eligible occupations include:

  • ICT professionals
  • Registered nurses
  • Chefs and cooks
  • Engineers
  • Construction trades
  • Hospitality and tourism managers

The occupation list is regularly reviewed – so it’s important to check the latest version before applying.

482 Visa Fees

The 482 visa fees vary depending on the stream and number of applicants. As of August 2025, base application charges include:

Core Skills Stream: from $3,210

Specialist Skills Stream: from $3,210

Labour Agreement Stream: from $3,210

Subsequent Entrant: from $3,210

Other costs may include English tests, health checks, police certificates, and migration agent fees. Employers also pay the Skilling Australians Fund (SAF) levy: the Department of Home Affairs calculates the required SAF levy amount using information provided in the online nomination application.

482 Visa Processing Time

The 482 visa processing time varies by stream, applicant circumstances, and case complexity. Typical times include:

Short-term Stream: 44-70 days

Medium-term Stream: 50-75 days

Labour Agreement Stream: 60-90 days

Delays are often caused by incomplete documentation or issues with the sponsorship or nomination stages, and the processing time can vary depending on the application load and other factors. Working with an experienced migration agent can help you avoid unnecessary setbacks.

Common challenges and pitfalls for the Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482) visa

Identifying the correct occupation.

Inaccurate selection of occupation can be one of the reasons for delay or refusal.

Nomination deficiencies.

Applications may fail if employers fail to demonstrate a genuine need for the position. Applications may also fail if employers use an incorrect or inappropriate method to determine the market salary rate, or nominate duties and responsibilities that don’t suit the standard duties and responsibilities for the nominated occupation.

Employment reference deficiency.

Problems may also be caused if a past employment reference letter contains duties and responsibilities that are inconsistent with the nominated occupation.

Stream selection confusion.

Choosing the wrong stream (direct entry vs TRT vs labour agreement) for the applicant’s circumstances may cause unnecessary complexity.

Incomplete documentation.

Missing health, character or skills documents, or errors in nomination detail, can delay processing or result in formal refusal.
